Which Countries Are Visa-Free for the Faroe Islands?
If you are planning a trip to the Faroe Islands that will be less than three months long, you may not need a visa. Citizens of countries in several areas are permitted to travel to the Faroe Islands visa-free for short-term visits under 90 days.
More specifically, these are the requirements by area:
Nordic countries: Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are permitted to visit the Faroe Islands without a visa. They can live, work, and study in the Faroe Islands for any length of time, although they still need a passport or a valid national ID to gain entry.
Schengen countries: Although the Faroe Islands are not part of the Schengen area, citizens of countries that have visa-free agreements with the Schengen area do not need a visa to visit the Faroe Islands. However, they must carry a valid passport or national ID card to enter, and trips must be under 90 days within a 180-day period.
EU/EAA countries: For visits under three months, citizens of EU/EAA countries do not need visas to enter the Faroe Islands. While the Faroe Islands are not part of the EU, special arrangements allow their citizens to enter without a visa.
United States and Canada: Citizens of the United States and Canada typically do not need a visa to enter the Faroe Islands; however, their passports must be valid for six months beyond their planned departure from the Faroe Islands.
Which Countries Require a Visa for the Faroe Islands?
Countries that require a visa for the Schengen area or Denmark will need to secure a visa to travel to the Faroe Islands.
Although the Faroe Islands are under Danish jurisdiction, a valid Danish visa allows entry to Denmark and does not encompass the Faroe Islands. The same is true for Schengen countries. A Schengen visa does not apply to the Faroe Islands.
If your visit is not for travel, and includes employment or residence, you must secure a permit for work or residence if you will be staying on the Faroe Islands for more than 90 days. This applies to citizens of all countries outside of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
