Sørvágsvatn, also known as Leitisvatn or the Floating Lake, is the Faroe Islands’ largest lake and is famous across the world for creating a unique optical illusion. When the lake is viewed at a right angle from the steep Trælanípa Cliff, it seems to float hundreds of feet directly above the ocean’s surface.
Sitting at an elevation of about 105 feet above sea level and separated only by a narrow strip of land, Sørvágsvatn is positioned on a sloping cliffside facing the Atlantic Ocean. The water empties into the ocean by way of the stunning 98-foot-tall Bøsdalafossur waterfall.
